That night I slept well and dreamed that I was hunting with my boys, that we were killing an enormous wild boar. If I missed anything in the transparent city, it was my sons and my shotguns and going hunting in the hills, but so what, I already missed those things before, ever since the war began spreading to our region and the noise and flashing of bombs made all the animals flee. Maybe, over time, Augusto and Pablo would come back and the creatures would return to their forests and they’d let us go out hunting somewhere nearby. Nobody had said we were prisoners or that it was dangerous or forbidden to go out, although to be fair, we hadn’t asked. Once you’ve been taken from your house and put in a line and transported to another place, you get used to not asking questions, to avoid making things worse. When it comes down to it, we saw the water owners hanging face-down as soon as we arrived, and since then it’s been clear to me that it’s better to be on these people’s good side than their bad.
